RoCo meets a local politician, gaining an understanding of who’s running this locale.

My Kids, Your Kids, Our Kids With Board of Education, District 1, Candidate Matthew Molyett

I spoke with Matthew Molyett via Zoom, as a face-to-face interview wasn’t doable due to COVID-19-related restrictions. As with Robert and his interview of Terri Hill, I was curious to see how it would all play out, as the in-person event is so much a part of our interviews. As it turns out, Matthew’s kindness, solicitousness, and flexibility made it a fun time–and an instructive one. As our Zoom meeting began, I saw that Matthew was wearing a blue checkered shirt with no tie. My first thought was: “Abercrombie and Fitch.” And then I thought, as we said our hellos … Read more

Josh Friedman, Member, Howard County Democratic Central Committee

I’ve known a few Josh-es Friedman in my day, readers, but never have I known one likes…well, Josh Friedman. From just an hour Josh I spent at Uncle Julio’s by the mall, well, there are so many things of note I could tell you I learned: for example, although Josh is a longtime Maryland resident, he traces his roots back to Alabama; when we met at 3:15 p.m., Josh had already walked 14,000 steps (“Hey, we have the same FitBit, Robert,” he said, and we both held our wrists up as if to introduce our fitness trackers to each other)–and … Read more

Vanessa Atterbeary, Maryland General Assembly Delegate District 13

If it’s true that hurt people hurt people, then supported people support people. Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary’s (D-13) life is proof of that, as I found out last week in an hour-long chat with her. We decided to meet at The Common Kitchen in Clarksville Commons. It’s in the district she represents, and she rightly wanted to meet somewhere there to contribute to its commerce. She said, “Well, Colleen, I’m partial to 13.” The next day, I sat at the counter inside The Common Kitchen that looks out onto the The Clarksville Common esplanade. I saw Vanessa approaching. She reached into … Read more

Herb Smith, Admin of the Biden for Maryland Facebook Page

Herb Smith had to delay our interview the day we were set to meet at Syriana Cafe and Gallery in Old Ellicott City. His boss had a last-minute work thing that came up. I was so not upset! That happens when you work as hard as Herb. I told him it was no problem and that we could meet lathe ter at same place. When he did show up his bent over backwards apologizing. “Robert, I’m so sorry. Man, I’m so sorry,” he said, rubbing his head and reaching out a hand to shake mine. The kid in Herb struck … Read more

Byron Macfarlane, Register of Wills on Wills, Estates, and More

Byron Macfarlane, Howard County’s Register of Wills, is the reason it all happened. By “it,” I mean Robert’s and my headfirst dive into Howard County via local politics. Our good friend, local pediatrician and politico Dr. Zaneb Beams suggested we volunteer with his campaign to get re-elected last year. We did, and after some lunches and canvasses and brainstorming sessions, we met lots of other local politicians and activists. We’ll always be grateful to Byron for introducing us to local political movers and shakers. That’s why I knew I didn’t even have to ask him to get together with me … Read more
