Dhruvak Mirani Candidate for Howard County Democratic Central Committee

Dhruvak Mirani has what we all want: thick hair. Well, that and energy, high ideals, and a compassionate spirit. But come on–thick hair is awesome! He also has something else we all want: youth. Well, I guess young people don’t want it…they have it. But as soon as you’re not young, you’re like, “What was I thinking–give me back my youth!” I don’t see that in Dhruvak’s future, though. I could tell instantly upon meeting him that he loves life and keeps moving forward. He looks at what he can help him create the world he envisions. But he’s not … Read more

Believe In Steve Bolen for District 9 Delegate!

As Steve and Linda pulled up to our house I waved to them. They got out, and for a moment, I got choked up. They’ve become like surrogate parents to me! They’re so loving and sweet. Every time I see them, Steve says, “We’re your biggest fans in Howard County, Akbi!” We said our hellos and I said, “Steve let me look at you! You look even cuter than usual!” And he did! Anyway, they came in and we sat down to talk about Steve’s bid for Delegate in District 9A. Boy, the Bolens and I go way back. They … Read more

Robbie Leonard On His Bid for Baltimore County State’s Attorney

Colleen was rummaging around in the black hole she calls “a purse” when I entered the kitchen. “Hold on a sec there, Missy,” I said in a deep voice. She looked up from her purse-search: “What?!–I’m getting late to interview Robbie Leonard!” “I know it’s your turn, but I think I should take this one,” I said. “Why?” “Because we’re both named Robert, and therefore have a bond that no one else can understand. We get each other.” Oh, OK, Then… Colleen, believer in all things mystical that she is, acquiesced. I gave her a quick peck on the cheek … Read more

Diane Penkova Fink Helps Maryland Women Emerge

I was sitting at a table for two at The Turn House in Hobbit’s Glen when I saw a woman in a blue dress approaching my table out of the corner of my eye. I knew from her dress–Democratic blue–that it was Diane Penkova Fink, the Executive Director (ED) of Emerge Maryland. “Hi, Colleen!” she said. I got up and we hugged. Emerge is, as its website states, an organization with a threefold mission: 1. Finding Democratic women who should run for office and get them into a training program. 2. Training Democratic women in the cutting-edge campaign tools they … Read more

Jess Feldmark and Her Legislative Spark

I texted back and forth with Delegate Jessica Feldmark’s (D-12) legislative aide, Katie Mettle, for a couple of days to arrive at the right time and place to interview Jessica. We committed to the lakefront in downtown Columbia. Jessica, it turns out, like any good community member/leader, keeps COVID-19 prevention methods at the fore of her mind. So we met up not only outside, but in our masks and six feet apart. We both brought blankets to sit on and food to eat (we never got to the food, as we were so engrossed in a relaxed but heartfelt conversation … Read more
