Terri Hill On Why She’s a Delegate in the Maryland General Assembly

Ever since Coronavirus-induced quarantine began, Colleen and I have been struggling with how to do interviews of HoCo notables. We can’t go to many places, even now that the economy is opening slowly. So our only article options are Zoom interviews. We both worried, though, that doing interviews on Zoom would take away the feeling of being connected to our subjects and we wouldn’t be able to pick up on things in our environment, and we both like to add little details about what was happening when and where we conducted our interviews, as regular readers of this site will … Read more

My Kids, Your Kids, Our Kids With Board of Education, District 1, Candidate Matthew Molyett

I spoke with Matthew Molyett via Zoom, as a face-to-face interview wasn’t doable due to COVID-19-related restrictions. As with Robert and his interview of Terri Hill, I was curious to see how it would all play out, as the in-person event is so much a part of our interviews. As it turns out, Matthew’s kindness, solicitousness, and flexibility made it a fun time–and an instructive one. As our Zoom meeting began, I saw that Matthew was wearing a blue checkered shirt with no tie. My first thought was: “Abercrombie and Fitch.” And then I thought, as we said our hellos … Read more

Getting the Down Low on Improving Your Community With Sue Geckle

Sue Geckle loves people. People love Sue Geckle. I am a person, therefore I love Sue Geckle! Sorry–but I was just having a conversation with Colleen, and she was remembering how they learned a lot of logic in her Master’s program in rhetoric and composition. But it’s still true: I really do love Sue! She and I met last week at The Common Kitchen to talk about her membership on the executive board of the local community service organization, HopeWorks. “At HopeWorks I’m a member of the Board of Directors,” she said with her hands resting politely in her lap. … Read more

Andrea Nunez, Director of the Office of Human Trafficking Prevention

I sat in the driver’s seat of the Toyota Prius Robert and I bought. And sat, and sat, and sat. Taillights as far as the eye could see. “There’s so much traffic in Howard County!” I said, out loud. I caught myself. It was a tasteless thing to say. “Come on, Colleen,” I thought to myself. I was complaining about vehicular traffic on my way to meet a woman who works against a much more dreadful kind of traffic–or trafficking, rather: human trafficking. I got to Andrea Nunez’s office shortly thereafter on Patuxent Woods Drive. I sat down for just … Read more

Taking the High Road With Kris J, Chief, Bureau of Highways

To this day, before I conduct interviews for rocoinhoco.com, I get nervous. And so it was last Monday an hour before I was set to meet Krishnakanth Jagarapu, or Kris J as he is known for short, the Chief of Howard County’s Bureau of Highways. Colleen experiences no such nervousness, probably because she spends an hour before each of her interviews praying, divining, and generally banishing all negativity from her aura (her words!). Alas, I’m no such amateur guru, so I have to rely on more…terrestrial, shall we way, methods of calming myself down–such as the Chocolate Cocoa Waffle at … Read more
