Shahan Rizvi: A Man With a Central Committee Plan!

Did you see that headline and read it all with the long “A” sound? A maan with a plaan? Or all with the short “A”. ShAhAn Rizvi? If you did the former, you’re probably right-handed. If the latter–probably left-handed! No, that’s not true. But it would be neat if it were true, right? The possibility is a beautiful thing. And Shahan sees the possibilities–good ones–in, it would appear, everything. He told us what he hopes to accomplish in his second go-round as a member of the Howard County State Democratic Central Committee! If Madonna was right–and as her biggest fan, … Read more

Robbie Leonard On His Bid for Baltimore County State’s Attorney

Colleen was rummaging around in the black hole she calls “a purse” when I entered the kitchen. “Hold on a sec there, Missy,” I said in a deep voice. She looked up from her purse-search: “What?!–I’m getting late to interview Robbie Leonard!” “I know it’s your turn, but I think I should take this one,” I said. “Why?” “Because we’re both named Robert, and therefore have a bond that no one else can understand. We get each other.” Oh, OK, Then… Colleen, believer in all things mystical that she is, acquiesced. I gave her a quick peck on the cheek … Read more

A Cup of Tea and a Little Honey With Tara Ebersole

On my way to Tara Ebersole’s home to talk to her about the adorable children’s books that she and her sister published, I thought about how Tara has that Heart and Ebersole magic. Sure, her name wasn’t always Ebersole (it was Eisenhauer), but true hearts find each other, as did Tara’s and her hubby’s, Del. Eric Ebersole (D-12). Regular readers of this site know Eric is a rocoinhoco fave–and so is Tara! Sometimes you don’t realize how much you’ve missed someone until you see them. And so it was for me when Tara opened the door, her dark hair framing … Read more

The Power of the Purse With Brooke Lierman

Brooke Lierman always carries her purse. It’s a beautifully designed classic, my old lady, Colleen tells me. It suits her very well. And since the power of the purse is one of the responsibilities of the Comptroller of Maryland, it’s a perfect fit. I had asked Brooke a while back to get together with me to talk about running for Comptroller of Maryland. She said, “Sure, Robert!” That meant a lot to me, given that her time is so valuable leading up to Election Day. She’s running against one person, Tim Adams, in the Democratic primary. The election is set for … Read more

Diane Penkova Fink Helps Maryland Women Emerge

I was sitting at a table for two at The Turn House in Hobbit’s Glen when I saw a woman in a blue dress approaching my table out of the corner of my eye. I knew from her dress–Democratic blue–that it was Diane Penkova Fink, the Executive Director (ED) of Emerge Maryland. “Hi, Colleen!” she said. I got up and we hugged. Emerge is, as its website states, an organization with a threefold mission: 1. Finding Democratic women who should run for office and get them into a training program. 2. Training Democratic women in the cutting-edge campaign tools they … Read more
